How to choose a language school in Brighton

This is a very important decision. We hope this blog will help you choose a school.

How do you know a school is good?

1) The best schools are regularly inspected by organisations that give accreditation (accrediting bodies). Accrediting bodies carefully check the quality of the school’s teaching, student care, administration and management. They also check that the school’s marketing and advertising is accurate and not misleading.

If a school is not accredited, ask the school two questions:

  1. Is the school ever inspected by anyone? Who?
  2. What are the results of the inspections?

Are you happy with the answers they give you?
Yes? – Fantastic!
No? – Do not waste your time and money!

There are a few accrediting bodies, and the British Council is probably the most well known. The British Council was the first accrediting body for language schools in the UK and sets the standards that all English language schools should maintain. If you want to be confident that the school you choose is of a good standard, you should choose an accredited school.

If the school you are considering is accredited by an accrediting body that is not the British Council, make sure you visit that accrediting body’s website and look at what their standards are.

2) Of course, there are some other things to consider when you choose your school.

Kind, friendly and helpful?
When you contact or visit a school are they kind and friendly? Obviously, they should be! Don’t worry, most schools are very friendly!

Student nationalities
Are the students from lots of different countries? A mixture of nationalities in your class is important because then you will need to practise your English to communicate with your new friends from other countries. Also, meeting people from different countries and cultures is fun and interesting!

Exam Classes – Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) Cambridge Advanced (CAE) IELTS

The best schools are exam specialists. If you want to study for an exam it is very important to choose a school who are experts in the exam you want to take. Choose a school with examiners for Cambridge in the teaching team. They mark the actual exams (including IELTS) for Cambridge, and obviously have a much better understanding of what you need to do to pass your exam than a normal teacher.

And don’t forget – accreditation!!

We hope this information is useful for you. If you have any questions or comments, please comment at the bottom of the page or contact Castle School. Whatever you decide, we wish you good luck and hope you enjoy your time in Brighton and have fun improving your English! Thank you for reading.

How to choose a language school in the UK

Question: Which city should I go to?

Answer: There are lots of fantastic cities in the UK- the home of the English language. Choosing the right one for you is a personal choice. Bigger cities are busier and have more choices for leisure, but can be expensive and difficult to travel across each day. Smaller cities and towns are sometimes a bit quieter and perhaps have less things for you to do, but are often friendlier and cheaper.
We believe that Brighton is the best of both worlds!

Brighton is not too big so it is friendly and easy to travel across, and is slightly cheaper than London. However, there are lots of things to do! It is by the beautiful sea and the air is fresher. There are two large universities and the community is very young. Brighton has a very busy night life and is relatively relaxing during the day.

Question: How do I know the school I am considering will be as good as they say on their website, adverts and social media marketing?

Answer: Accreditation.
The best schools are regularly inspected by organisations that give accreditation (accrediting bodies). Accrediting bodies carefully check the quality of the school’s teaching, student care, administration and management. They also check that the school’s marketing and advertising is accurate and not misleading.

If the school you are considering is accredited by a different accrediting body, make sure you visit that accrediting body’s website and look at what their standards are.
